News of the display spread across the world and Brontosaurus became a cultural icon throughout much of the 20th century, appearing in many books and films, including the 1914 cartoon Gertie the Dinosaur 1925 silent movie The Lost World. The owner of the museum, Henry Fairfield Osborn, an opponent of Marsh labelled his display Brontosaurus in retaliation against Marsh. However confusion spread among the general public after a museum mounted an Apatosaurus skeleton in 1905, but it was made from fossils of other dinosaurs, most notably a skull from Camarasaurus and labelled 'Brontosaurus'. Much later in 1903 a study into the two sauropods found that they were in fact the same species and because Apatosaurus was named first, by naming procedure, Brontosaurus Excelsus would need to be renamed Apatosaurus Excelsus.

Two years later in 1879, he found another sauropod skeleton, which was better preserved than his Apatosaurus specimen and named it Brontosaurus Excelsus. In 1877 paleontologist Othniel Charles Marsh discovered and named the sauropod Apatosaurus Ajax. The most fascinating aspect of Apatosaurus doesn't actually have to do with its biology or ecology, but with its naming and its relationship with the name Brontosaurus. Like Diplodocus, Apatosaurus also had a whiplash tail used for defense and visual communication.

Because of this, Apatosaurus is considered more primitive than most other Morrison Formation sauropods. Apatosaurus is similar to another Morrison Formation sauropod, Diplodocus, but differs in being shorter and more robust, with heavier, more solid bones. Apatosaurus is a large sauropod from Late Jurassic USA and is one of many sauropods found in the Morrison Formation.
